How It All Began...

Comedy Wars
The 1997 11th Annual NZ Universities Comedy Competition

The launching pad of Whacko Productions, Comedy Wars was a $20,000 production that saw Wade raise all funds and sponsorship and managed all dealings, financial and otherwise. Comedy Wars involved over 50 performers from Universities all over the country performing in three nights of comedy. There was a sell out night of Stand Up comedy at Kitty O'Briens with Ewen 'the Westie' Gilmour as MC followed by a Theatresports night and Sketch comedy night hosted by Radar at the Powerstation.

Celebrity judges included John Hawkesby, Alison James (Shortland Street), Jon Bridges and Pam Corkery with Nintendo 64 and Skiwi Winter Holiday packages as spot prizes plus many other giveaways.

The Improv Bandits

Wade's vision with The Improv Bandits was to create a more narrative driven improvisation company that is aware of its roots in theatre. Taking away all competitive elements the aim was to have a safe environment evolve where actors feel comfortable in taking risks and revel in the theatre of adventure that improvisation offers.

Wade kicked off the initial season of The Improv Bandits in 1997 at the SiLO Theatre with 4 actors. Despite only performing a short 4 week season, The Improv Bandits created a cult audience that carried through to the following year.

The 1998 season saw 7 actors performing a 27 week season and it's high-energy performances received a lot of media attention. The Improv Bandits proved itself to be a real showcase of the nation's outstanding talent.

The 1999 season has seen The Improv Bandits become a major part of Auckland City's late night entertainment and consolidate their reputation as a real force in improvisation on an international level.

The Toss - it's coming at you!

In the 1998 International Laugh! Festival Wade came up with a concept for a Stand Up comedy show mixed with Sketch comedy. The result was The Toss, a show which saw three of the country's most promising comedians join together for a show that received much media attention due to the fact Wade succeeded in getting sponsorship from a massage palour. Wade produced, publicised, co-wrote and performed the financial success that was The Toss.

3 People at the Cinema

Wade Jackson, along with five time international award winning director Michael Robinson created a show that was deemed the funniest comedy play staged in New Zealand in recent years.

Highly original in that not one word was spoken throughout the realistic theatre performance, the play was devised by a talented cast from three of The Improv Bandits. It showed that silence is a lack of words, not a lack of meaning.

3 People at the Cinema received rave reviews across the board.

"Three People brings the audience along for the ride. This adventure is one we are all going on, together."
- NZ Herald

"Nude-winter-swim-refreshingly-nice genuinely funny moments kept the audience salivating for more. Three People at the Cinema is a play where you can hear the sounds of lips forming a grin."
- Lava Magazine

"3 impressively good actors. For the audience it was a clearly enjoyable experience. We giggled, chuckled and guffawed throughout. We were bemused. But more importantly we were entertained in one of the most value for money shows I've seen." - Auckland What's Happening

Wade Jackson and Improv Productions are looking to relaunch this show sometime in the near future.

The Laugh Inc Show

Wade established this show at the Horse & Trap comedy venue. Along with fellow comedians Mark Scott and Mike Loder, Wade performed a monthly comedy show that incorporated stand up with improvised and sketch comedy. This show was instrumental in allowing Laugh Inc to perform their 3 month tour of the Canadian Fringe Festivals.

Poor, White & Trashed

This sell out show was part of the 1999 International Laugh! Festival that toured Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. Glowing reviews highlighted the different styles of comedy performed.

The Blonde Ninja

Wade's solo show that left gag-orientated stand up comedy and developed into a relaxed and personal story-telling style which delighted audiences and critics alike. Based on his experiences of living and training martial arts in Japan, The Blonde Ninja comedy showcase illustrated Wade's remarkable talent of telling captivating stories that intrigued one and all.

Letters of Support For Wade Jackson
and Improv Productions

"As festival Director of the TV2 International LAUGH! Festival I have been admiring Wade's capacity as a producer and performer in the comedy industry for the last 18 months or so.

His dealings with the festival as producer of his own shows have been exemplary, he managed to obtain sponsorship, excellent media coverage, a good roster of shows for his venue and good houses. And if this wasn't good enough, Wade managed to pull this all off while setting up and performing a very successful season at the Big Stinkin Comedy Festival a month before the festival.

I have no hesitation in recommending Wade as an entertainment producer."

Margi Mellsop
Festival Director

"Comedyfest is the largest comedy producer in New Zealand. I belive that Wade is the most promising producer to have sprung up in the last five years. Wade will soon be running comedy in this town, of that I have no doubt. He is already a respected member of the comedy community, and has earnt this through fair dealing and innovation."

Paul Horan
Director, Comedyfest Ltd

"Wade Jackson founded the late night comedy The Improv Bandits in 1997, performing every friday since the SiLO's conception; and spearheaded the creation of 3 People At The Cinema, a new NZ work which premiered at the SiLO in August 1998. He produced both these shows, to much success and has my full recommendation as a confident and competent producer.

I would suggest that Wade (and The Improv Bandits) are New Zealand's most original and innovative improvisation company."

Sharyn Duncan
SiLO Theatre Manager

"Wade is an outstanding individual, hard working, creative, persistent, and possessed with an ability to succeed at whatever he wishes.

Producing theatre is extraordinarily difficult in New Zealand. Wade is more than equal to the task, raising funds from unlikely sources, securing innovative and eyecatching publicity, and generally getting everything done on time and under budget.

I have worked with many producers over the years and I can say without reserve that Wade is one of the best.

I am confident Wade is equal to any task which may be presented to him."

Michael Robinson
Director, BBC London, England
